The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo at an illegal oil bunkering site, according to Punch
The confirmation followed widespread public outcry over Soyombo’s detention.
The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), through a post on X (formerly Twitter), disclosed that Soyombo had been in Army custody for three days. “The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder, Fisayo Soyombo, for three days running. Journalism is not a crime,” FIJ stated.
In a statement released on Friday, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, provided details about the operation that led to the arrest. He explained that the operation was based on intelligence regarding a notorious gang of oil thieves involved in pipeline sabotage and illegal oil connections in the region.
“During the operation, suspects were apprehended at the illegal oil bunkering site, including Fisayo Soyombo, who was detained at the scene,” Danjuma said. “The suspects are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to determine their level of involvement.”
Danjuma emphasized the Army’s commitment to combating oil theft, noting recent successes in anti-illegal oil bunkering operations. He urged media organizations to ensure accuracy in their reporting on the matter.
“The Division reassures the public of its dedication to curbing criminal activities, particularly oil theft, in the region. These efforts aim to enhance oil and gas production in the country,” he concluded.
