The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro.
The former minister had met all his bail conditions on Thursday night whereupon the anti-graft agency began processing his release.
A source close to the case confirmed his release to Punch. “The EFCC just released Senator Obanikoro around 5pm. He is on his way home now,” he said.
Obanikoro had been in EFCC custody since October 17th when he returned from the United States to account for multiple charges of corruption and diversion of fundsduring his time as minister under the administration of Goodluck Jonathan.
According to the EFCC, he received N4.7bn through the Office of the National Security Advisor in 2014.
He was said to have kept the sum of N785m while the balance was given to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Senator Iyiola Omisore who was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State in 2014.
Despite initially pleading not guilty to the charges, Obanikoro was said to have allegedly beaten a retreat and returned N100m to the government with a pledge to return N480m while his American and Nigerian passports were submitted to the commission.
