  • Ramadan fast continues until new moon is sighted
  • Muslims in Nigeria will continue the Ramadan fast due to non sighting of the moon.
     this year's ramadan
The new moon to be sighted is for the month of ‘Sha’awaal’ (10th month of Islamic calendar). Muslims have been urged to observe the eid prayers on Wednesday. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, had earlier said the new moon (of Shawwal) was not sighted as at Monday night in Nigeria and so the month of Ramadan would complete its 30-day circle. It was reported earlier that the Ramadan moon sighting reporting time has been extended to 12 midnight, to allow for deeper scrutiny of the reported sight of the crescent and to foreclose any further controversies on the issue.

Sultan of Sokoto The Sultan usually announces the sighting of the crescent between the hours of 9 to 10 p.m. However, there was controversy last year after the announcement was made very late and many persons went to bed without knowing that the new crescent had been sighted. Eid-Fitr is now to hold Wednesday 1st Shawwal 1437 A.H 6th July. Some countries like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia had earlier announced Wednesday as Eid-el-Fitri day. The celebrations are used to mark the end of the month-long Ramadan fast.
