Heritage bank, one of Nigeria’s commercial banks, has accused online newspaper, Sahara Reporters of practicing “reckless journalism” over a tweet by the paper that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) planned to dissolve and takeover its management and board.
The tweet by Sahara Reporters followed an intervention yesterday by the CBN in another bank – Skye bank. The board and management of that bank were reconstituted by the apex bank following its “declining health” which the CBN said could affect the overall stability of the financial sector.
The chairman, managing director, all non-executive directors, deputy managing director and two longest serving executive directors of Skye bank resigned their appointments; and the CBN selected Alhaji M.K. Ahmad to be the new chairman while Mr. Adetokunbo Abiru was picked as new managing director.
And then Sahara Reporters tweeted this:

It was a tweet which Heritage bank did not take lightly. It described it as “obnoxious” and “falsehood” meant to destroy the “emerging bank”.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” the bank said in a statement on Monday, “the Central Bank of Nigeria has no such plan towards the bank.”
The Heritage bank message was meant to be an assurance to its customers and shareholders who would obviously have panicked especially in light of the big news from Skye bank. It advised its customers to “disregard the wicked misinformation.”
“Heritage Bank will not also sit back and allow its hard earned reputation to be tarnished on the pages of an irresponsible blog,” the bank said. It said it will ensure that those “peddling unfounded rumours and speculations are brought to book.”
