Justice Kudirat Jose of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday sentenced a business man, Sayyu Aliyu Zakari to seven years imprisonment for stealing 9000 cartons of Dangote spaghetti worth N9, 180,000.
Zakari was arraigned on a three count charge of stealing and issuing a dud cheque through his company, Alrander limited to Dangote company.
The judge sentenced Zakari to five years imprisonment on count one, two years in respect of each of count two and three while his company, Alrander limited is to pay a fine of N1m.
The court ordered that the prison terms shall run concurrently from February 9, 2016.
The convict, Zakari and his company, Alrander Limited was arraigned on August 13, 2013 on the charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Zakari was said to have, on September 11,2012, with intent to defraud, knowingly and fraudulently issued a Fidelity Bank Plc cheque for the sum of N9, 180,000 aimed at purchasing the food products.
The EFCC SAID the offence of stealing is contrary to Section 285(1) of the Criminal Code Cap C3 Vol. 44 Laws of Lagos State Nigeria while the offence of issuance of dishonored cheques is contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the dishonoured cheques offence Act Cap D11 Laws of the Federation.
