Achuba emerges Kogi deputy governor

THE Kogi State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, confirmed the appointment of Honourable Simon Achuba as the deputy governor of the state.
The confirmation followed the submission of his name to the legislative arm by the governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
It will be recalled that the supposed deputy governor, James Faleke, rejected being a deputy to Bello following which the governor was inaugurated without a deputy on January 27.
The speaker of the assembly, Momoh Lawal, who read the letter at the resumed sitting of the house, said the governor had exercised his right under Section 191(3c) of the 1999 Constitution.
The house, which later dissolved into committee of the whole house under the chairmanship of the speaker, thereafter, commenced the screening of the nominee.
The member representing Bassa state constituency, Sunday Shigaba, who moved the motion for the confirmation of the nominee, however, said he should be allowed to take a bow and leave the chambers.
Seconding the motion, the member representing Igalamela/Odolu state constituency, Friday Sani, said Achuba would be a pride to the people of the state.






According to him, there was no reason to question the former deputy speaker of the same assembly.
The speaker, however, expressed the readiness of the legislators to work with the governor in his effort at driving the change agenda in the state.
Speaking after his confirmation, Achuba said he was ready to contribute his quota to the development of the state.
He said, “The people should expect development they have never seen before.”
Meanwhile, security operatives attached to the Kogi State Government House, on Tuesday, prevented journalists in the state from covering the inauguration of the deputy governor, Simon Achuba.
The plain cloth and uniformed men at the entrance of the banquet hall of the Lugard House, in Lokoja, ordered journalists, mainly members of the correspondents chapel out of the reception of the hall.
The newsmen had rushed down from the House of Assembly complex to the private residence of the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, where he is using as office only to be directed to the banquet hall of the Government House.
However, the armed security men, who had initially screened the journalists at the reception, later ordered them out of the hall, claiming that the event was not for coverage.
The security men claimed they had an instruction from the above that the inauguration was not meant to be a public function.
One of the security men said, “if the programme is meant for coverage, it would have been held at the Township Stadium.”
