A proud mother cradles her tiny baby, showing him off to the camera, as
they convalesce in an Italian hospital following an unusual and
harrowing birth. Ester Terry, from Nigeria, clutches her tiny son
Khalifa Nyka at Catania's Cannizzaro hospital, in Italy. The 24-year-old
was attempting to cross the Mediterranean on a dilapidated dinghy with
around 100 other migrants and refugees when she went into labour.
Ester incredibly managed to safely give birth to the little boy with the help of a doctor aboard the Italian rescue vessel, while still at sea. The boy was born while the boat made its way to Lampedusa, the southernmost European island.
