  • We are still waiting for governor's response to impeachment petition—Osun Speaker
  • SPEAKER of the Osun State House of Assembly, Honourable Najeem Salaam, says the legislature is waiting for Governor Rauf Aregbesola's response to a petition calling for his impeachment over alleged financial recklessness.

This is contained in a statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr Goke Butika, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Justice Folahanmi Oloyede, a judge in Osun State, wrote a petition to the Assembly calling for the impeachment of the governor for his inability to pay eight months salaries of workers.

Salaam said in the statement that it was not true that the Assembly had invited Folahanmi to appear before it to defend the petition.

The statement said the Assembly in return had asked the governor to respond to the allegations raised by the judge without further delay.

According to the statement, a copy of the petition has been made available to the governor through the office of the speaker.

The statement said the Assembly had not communicated any date to the petitioner to appear before it.

It said the timeline given to Aregbesola to respond to the petition had not expired.
According to the statement, after the response of the governor to the petition, members of the Assembly will take the necessary step.

The statement urged the people of the state to disregard the rumour that Oloyede had been summoned by the Assembly to defend the petition.

The statement urged security agencies to be on red alert to forestall plan by some people to use the petition as a launchpad for their premeditated violence.

"We have not invited Oloyede to appear before the House on Wednesday, the House will not be stampeded to do its job," it said.
