Unknown gunmen on Saturday killed a former chairman of the Peoples'
Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina-Ala local government area of Benue
state.
The deceased, Lumunnege Zegeguve was shot dead by the gunmen who were believed to have traced him to Tiir axis in Kastina-Ala area.
Spokesman of the police, ASP Austin Ezeani however ruled out the involvement of hired assassins as he maintained that it was a case of criminality.
He explained that armed robbers numbering up to five had shot the former PDP chairman to death and fled afterwards.
Ezeani further told journalists in Makurdi on Sunday that a relation of the deceased, one Orshee Tete Zegeguve was arrested at the scene of the incident while three empty shells of AK47 rifle were also recovered.
The spokesman added that the police are now on the trail of the gangsters just as the victim's corpse has since been deposited at the General hospital in Katsina-Ala.
Our correspondent reports that in recent times, kidnapping of people and armed robbery have become rampart in the ancient Kastina Ala town.
Some unidentified gunmen last week killed an Assistant Inspector of Police, Baba Ibrahim and a civilian who went on a special mission from the Force Headquarters, Abuja to investigate the case of cattle rustling in the area.
Terwase Burbwa, a tertiary institution staff in the town was also abducted, bringing the number of kidnapped persons in the College of Education, Kastina Ala to three in just one month alone.
