Serena Williams, a 19 time grand slam champion has withdrawn from
the India Open Wells championship due to a knee Injury she pulled during
practice two days ago.
“A couple of days ago in my practice I just really injured my knee
and I fought through it and I kept playing. Today I was struggling just
to even walk.”
In 2001, Serena and her sister, Venus, were scheduled to play each
other in the Indian Wells semifinals when Venus withdrew prior to the
match.
The crowd booed, and then booed Serena some more in the final, which she eventually won.
Since then, she has boycotted the Indian Open, but her return was met with a loud ovation.
If not for the knee injury, Serena may have gone on to clinch her
third trophy in the desert, but she has however promised to return next
year.
